The Urban Water Management Research Unit aims to make a contribution to the transformation of South African settlements by finding innovative ways and means of mitigating water scarcity, improving water quality, thereby protecting ecosystems, through the development of water sensitive urban areas that are sustainable, resilient and adaptable to change, while simultaneously being a place where people want to live.

The Unit was established in 2004. It has contributed to primary to developing guidelines for Sustainable Drainage Systems (SuDS), and a framework for implementing Water Sensitive Urban Design (WSUD) in South Africa.
